About APCOW2024

Background of the Conference

The first Asia Pacific Conference on Offshore Wind Technology (APCOW2024) will be held at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, on November 25-27, 2024. This groundbreaking conference, which aims to advance offshore wind power technology, discuss key challenges, and explore innovative solutions to accelerate the deployment of the offshore wind energy industry, will bring together leading experts, academic researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers from Asia Pacific and all around the world.

The origins of APCOW can be traced back to academic exchanges among several offshore wind research groups in Asian and Pacific countries a decade ago. These exchanges evolved into an annual symposium hosted by the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics (RIAM) at Kyushu University, primarily supported by a joint research program aimed at fostering international collaboration within RIAM. During 2022-2024, the symposium also received partial support from the China-Australian Joint Research Center for Offshore Wind and Wave Energy Harnessing. Initially, participants were primarily from East Asian countries, but attendance has since expanded to include participants from other Asian countries and Europe. In 2023, the standing committee formally decided to elevate the symposium to an international conference starting in 2024, naming it the Asia Pacific Conference on Offshore Wind Technology (APCOW). This conference will be held annually, rotating among different countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The first APCOW conference, APCOW2024, will be organized by the Research and Education Center for Offshore Wind (RECOW) at Kyushu University. Established in 2022, RECOW, with RIAM at its core, aims to become a leading center for offshore wind energy-related research and education in the Asia Pacific region. RECOW fosters collaboration among industry, academia, and governments, both domestically and internationally, to address challenges in offshore wind power.

Welcome Message

The city of Fukuoka and Kyushu University are proud to welcome the offshore wind energy community to the 1st APCOW2024 conference. The aim of organizing APCOW2024 is to provide a platform for academia and the offshore wind industry to share their latest research outcomes, build collaborative relationships, and boost the development of offshore wind energy. This conference will benefit Asia-Pacific countries in achieving their net-zero national targets on time.

The conference will be held at Nishijin Plaza, Kyushu University, located in the center area of Fukuoka city. Nishijin Plaza offers state-of-the-art facilities and a conducive environment for productive discussions and knowledge exchange.

To enhance the academic level of the 1st APCOW2024 conference, a Special Issue entitled "Frontiers of Offshore Wind Farm" will be organized in the journal Ocean Engineering, featuring a collection of the most outstanding full papers presented at the conference. Additionally, to encourage collaboration between academia and the offshore wind industry, an "Industry Session" will be held during the conference. This session will allow industry professionals to demonstrate their needs while academics share their cutting-edge technologies in close proximity.

Fukuoka, the host city of APCOW2024, is one of the leading tourist cities in Japan, which is highly regarded for its food culture. Fukuoka City was selected in the "Food" category of the "Best In Travel 2023" by Lonely Planet. November is the best season for viewing autumn leaves and the Grand Sumo November Tournament will be held at Fukuoka Convention Center.

On behalf of the organizing committee, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to all participants joining us at APCOW2024.

Prof. Changhong Hu, Chair of APCOW2024

Call for Abstracts/Full-papers

We invite researchers, scholars, and practitioners to submit abstracts or full papers for presentation on topics including, but not limited to:

To help present your latest research outcomes at the 1st APCOW2024 conference, there are two options for you to choose.

  1. 1) Submitting an extended abstract, or
  2. 2) Submitting a full paper

Abstracts submissions are intended as “extended abstracts” able to showcase the overall content of the study. The extended abstract size should be 2~4 pages. The submission deadline for extended abstracts is July 31, August 31, 2024. The submitted extended abstracts will be reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee (PSC, consists of the members from ISC, SC, and LOC). Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by email on September 1, 2024, including whether they will give an oral or poster presentation.

The full paper submission should be 6~12 pages, with single-spaced, single column on 8.5 by 11 inch (A4 size) paper and with normal margins of 1 inch (2.5cm) on all four sides. The paper template is provided here. An instruction for the preparation of the paper is also shown in the paper template. The substance of the full papers to be presented at the APCOW2024 should not have been previously presented or published. The submission deadline for the full paper is August 31, 2024.

Contributed full papers will be accepted for oral presentation at APCOW2024. After APCOW2024, PSC will select and invite full papers for consideration for publication in a special issue of the journal Ocean Engineering.

The extended abstracts and full papers in PDF format are to be uploaded via the following Internet Submission form.
